Background of the Study
Civic education is fundamental to nurturing informed, active citizens who understand their rights and responsibilities within a democratic society. In secondary schools in Katsina, Katsina State, traditional methods of teaching civic education are increasingly being supplemented by innovative digital storytelling techniques. Digital storytelling combines narrative with multimedia elements such as images, audio, and video to create engaging educational content that resonates with young learners (Ibrahim, 2024). This approach leverages the power of personal narratives and interactive media to make abstract civic concepts more accessible and relatable. The adoption of digital storytelling in civic education aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-life applications by illustrating historical events, social issues, and the democratic process in a dynamic format (Bello, 2023).

In today’s digital era, students are accustomed to consuming information through visual and interactive channels. Consequently, integrating digital storytelling into the curriculum aligns with the learning preferences of modern students and enhances their engagement with civic education. This innovative teaching method not only enriches the learning experience but also fosters critical thinking, empathy, and a deeper understanding of civic responsibilities (Umar, 2024). Moreover, digital storytelling allows educators to contextualize civic education within local cultural and historical narratives, thereby making the content more relevant and impactful for students. The background of this study highlights the potential of digital storytelling to transform civic education by making it more interactive, inclusive, and reflective of contemporary societal challenges. The research seeks to explore how digital narratives can serve as a catalyst for civic engagement, empowering students to actively participate in community and national development (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Traditional approaches to civic education in secondary schools in Katsina often rely on didactic lectures and textbook-based learning, which can lead to passive learning and limited student engagement. This traditional method does not adequately prepare students to critically analyze and participate in democratic processes (Bello, 2023). In addition, the lack of contextualized and relatable content makes it challenging for students to connect with the subject matter. The rapid evolution of digital media, however, has created opportunities for more interactive and immersive learning experiences through digital storytelling. Despite its potential, the adoption of digital storytelling in civic education faces challenges such as inadequate technological infrastructure, limited training for educators, and resistance to change from traditional teaching practices (Umar, 2024). Furthermore, there is insufficient empirical data on the effectiveness of digital storytelling in enhancing civic knowledge and fostering active citizenship among secondary school students in Katsina. This study aims to investigate these challenges by assessing the impact of digital storytelling on students’ understanding of civic concepts, their engagement with civic activities, and their overall attitude toward democratic participation. The research will analyze how digital storytelling can address the shortcomings of traditional teaching methods, improve critical thinking skills, and promote a more informed and participatory citizenry (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design and implement digital storytelling modules for civic education.

  2. To evaluate the impact of digital storytelling on student engagement and understanding of civic concepts.

  3. To identify challenges and propose strategies for integrating digital storytelling in civic education.

Research Questions

  1. How does digital storytelling influence students’ understanding of civic education?

  2. What are the challenges faced by educators in implementing digital storytelling?

  3. How can digital storytelling be optimized to enhance civic engagement among secondary school students?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the innovative use of digital storytelling in civic education, offering insights into its effectiveness in enhancing student engagement and understanding (Ibrahim, 2024). The findings will be valuable for educators and policymakers aiming to modernize civic education and promote active citizenship. By demonstrating the potential of digital narratives to transform learning, the study contributes to the broader discourse on educational innovation and democratic participation (Bello, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the evaluation of digital storytelling as a tool for enhancing civic education in secondary schools in Katsina, Katsina State. It does not extend to other subjects or regions and focuses exclusively on civic education.
